Media 2070 Announces Partnership with USC Charlotta Bass Journalism and Justice Lab

Coursework, lectures and a research project will help the next generation of journalists understand and repair media harm

The media reparations movement continues to grow and a new partnership is helping the next generation of journalists integrate media repair into their work.

The University of Southern California Annenberg Center Charlotta Bass Journalism and Justice Lab is working with Media 2070 to teach students how to identify media harm and practice reparative journalism.

Media 2070 Campaign Manager Venneikia Williams will serve as a guest lecturer and Campaign Coordinator Diamond Hardiman will supervise an archival research project on media repair with work-study fellows and Annenberg students. Students will have an opportunity to evaluate definitions of newsworthiness in the past and today and understand the value of other stories, information and communication in the Afro future. Students will leave with real tangible tools and skills, including a sketch, toolkit, and a drafted plan for making Black Future Newsstands real wherever they are.

The Charlotta Bass Journalism & Justice Lab is the University of Southern California’s first media studies center that is dedicated to saving, studying and sharing the work of prominent and hidden figures who have been central to Black social justice movements in America. This partnership flourished after  Media 2070 shared work completed with another academic institution– Colorado College. Richardson’s interest in working together allowed the two already acquainted organizations to deepen their relationship.

“This partnership is exciting particularly because of The Charlotta Bass Journalism and Justice Lab at USC Annenberg is an intentionally crafted space within the world’s top journalism school,” said Anshantia Oso, Senior Director of Media 2070. “I think it gives us an opportunity to discuss media repair with a generation of new journalists who already understand the need for this.”

Williams will serve as guest lecturer for the month of September and the overall project runs until May 2025 with Hardiman leading the research effort.
