Media 2070 is transforming the newscape with a focus on ensuring our stories are told accurately. This month is Black Narrative Power Month and to end it, organizers held a live panel discussion.

February is Black Narrative Power Month, a time to uplift Black communities, preserve our stories, and reflect on the role of mass media in shaping historical and contemporary narratives. Media 2070, a leading advocate for reparative journalism, marked this significant month with a powerful livestream panel titled The Lineage of Sacred Storytelling on YouTube. This discussion brought together experts across various disciplines to explore how storytelling remains a sacred practice in Black communities, shaping resilience, history, and the future of media.
Featured Panelists
The conversation featured a dynamic group of speakers, each offering unique perspectives on Black storytelling traditions:
Cheryl Thompson-Morton – Black Media Initiative Director for the Center for Community Media at the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism
Arianne Edwards – Historian
Allen Frimpong – Creative, cooperative entrepreneur
Alexa Williams – Writer and ongoing organizer with Black Future Newsstand
Our Role in Elevating the Conversation
Our team played a pivotal role in amplifying this critical discussion. By leveraging our network and strategic outreach methods, we ensured that The Lineage of Sacred Storytelling reached a broad and engaged audience.
Sourcing Cheryl Thompson-Morton: During a meeting we organized, we connected with Cheryl Thompson-Morton, recognizing her invaluable insight into the evolving landscape of Black media. This connection helped bring her expertise to the panel, enriching the discussion with a deep understanding of community-driven journalism and media advocacy.
Promotional Strategy: To maximize viewership, we worked with the Free Press team to secure an eye-catching flyer, which we posted across social media platforms, using our unique approach to writing captions and emailed invitations that are designed to hook the reader. In fact, our post was seen by 2,000 people despite running the same week. Beyond broad promotion, we also executed targeted outreach, sending direct invitations to key community members and thought leaders, ensuring a well-attended and meaningful conversation.

The Impact of Black Narrative Power Month
Media 2070’s Black Narrative Power Month initiative is a powerful response to the ongoing erasure and distortion of Black voices in mass media. Through events like The Lineage of Sacred Storytelling, the initiative fosters spaces where Black journalists, historians, organizers, and creatives can reclaim and redefine the narratives shaping our communities.
This panel was more than a conversation—it was a testament to the power of storytelling as an act of resistance, preservation, and transformation. As we continue to support initiatives like this, we remain committed to uplifting Black voices and ensuring that our histories and futures are told with the depth, nuance, and reverence they deserve.
