Media 2070 has designated February as Black Narrative Power Month, noting that Black History Month is a crucial time to reflect on the need to uplift Black communities and preserve our stories — particularly when it comes to mass media.
In celebration, Media 2070 has released a new toolkit aimed at helping Black folks in the media industry find resilience and peace through political education, music playlists and wellness exercises. Organizers say the toolkit is a quick but thorough way for people to learn more about reparative journalism.
“Since the inception of this nation, the prevailing narrative about Black people has been one of inhumanity,” said Media 2070 Senior Director Anshantia Oso. “To combat the myth of Black inferiority — and to fight anti-Black racism — we must be willing and able to affirm our full humanity. Media 2070 is advancing a culture of care in the media industry, and we are starting with serving our community of journalists, media makers and creatives.”
“Creating a media system that allows all of us to share our individual and communal stories requires that we actually build and operate out of a culture of care,” said Media 2070 Campaign Manager Venneikia Williams.
The toolkit can be accessed online and includes:
Resources, readings and videos for journalists to deeply engage in this work
Mindfulness and sensory work to help regulate anxious nervous systems
Empowering music playlists that can help restore a sense of calm
This toolkit is part of Media 2070’s holistic approach to celebrating Black Narrative Power Month. Programming will also include a panel of media makers. Visit Media 2070’s website to learn more.
