What Kamala Harris is Going Through: Two Black Women Leaders Openly Discuss the Difficulties of Leading Mostly White Industries

By: MMM Editorial Team

We're one week away from Election Day and Black women are all over the country are watching Kamala Harris closely, cheering from the sidelines but also reflecting on the struggles they've faced in leadership positions in their own industries.

"This is not new; Black women built this country," said Sophia Casey, master-certified coach who works with c-suite executives and was Director of First Impressions for the White House. She appeared on the show with Anshantia Oso, Senior Director at Media 2070, which is committed to the radical repair of the American media system. "Black women cleaned up constantly and we still do after the mainstream mistakes and mess-ups and now is no different. Even with her winning, there is still a lot of work to do. I want to make sure I don't end up spaces and support other Black women so they don't end up in spaces where we are looked at as 'mom-ala.'"

Oso pointed out that Black women are not only more likely to be heaped with extra responsibility but also likely to face increased criticism and doubt:

"Should the other scenario and she doesn't win, this will be laid at her feet because of that same dynamic."

The conversation also included Dr. Nii-Quartelai Quartey, author of Kamala, the Motherland, and Me. You can hear the full episode here.
